Lang Lang

The Inventory: Lang Lang from FT Magazine

Lang Lang, 28, performed his first public recital at the age of five, and all his concerts sell out. He has played with the world’s best orchestras and was the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics.
What was your earliest ambition?
I always wanted to be a pianist.
Public school or state school? University or straight into work?
In China when I was a kid there were only state schools. You went to the nearest. I went to the Curtis Institute of Music in America for high school and college.
Who is your mentor?
My teachers. I still talk to my first professor, to Gary Graffman from Curtis, and Christoph Eschenbach, who discovered me.
How physically fit are you?
It’s hard to have a six pack, but I’m healthy. I go to fitness training and play ping pong whenever I can.
